Declaration Cricket makes a return after 10 years

The 2026/27 season begins with the return of a format trialled briefly 10 years ago: Timed (or "Declaration") Cricket. This Saturday the morning grades begin their 2-day competitions but the opening 2 rounds are single-day games with a twist. 105 overs are to be bowled in the day instead of the typical 100, with the team batting first able to declare at any point. A declaration is enforced at the maximum of 55 overs. Saints XI finish 4th in pre-season competition

St Albans sent a team to the annual Mud Cup pre-season competition in Blenheim for a 3rd year in a row. The competition was extended from 4 to 5 teams this year, with 4 Christchurch clubs plus the host association Marlborough. We made it through 3 round robin games across the Friday and Saturday (including a bye) before Sunday morning's final round. An opening win against Sydenham promised much, but this was followed by defeats to Heathcote and the hosts. The club is in a stronger position both on and off the field, and whilst our progress is incremental, it is measured and positive. I believe we are moving in the right direction. Lachie Harper earns Canterbury Cricket contract

Star Saints Premier all-rounder Lachie Harper has earned a Canterbury men's contract for the 2026/27 season following an impressive debut season in the red-and-black. Lachie had been on the fringes of the side for some time, but with a sustained run of fitness and form stepped up another level last season. Firstly at club level where he struck 2 centuries and 4 fifties in 17 innings, scoring 616 runs at 41.07. He still finished 4th in the Saints runs aggregates despite representative duties taking him away for a third of the season. His bowling loads were managed, only sending down 65.4 overs
