    While the Premiership and Championship sides got underway on Saturday, the true season opening - where all Saints teams are playing at the same time - takes place this Saturday. To maintain the tradition we've upheld for over a century, a small formal official Season Opening ceremony will be held after play at our Hagley Oval pavilion. The lounge will be open from 6.30pm onwards and the Bledisloe Cup test will be live on the big screen, with kickoff at 7.10pm.     The opening day's play of the season is this Saturday and the XIs have been named for the Sporting Edge Premier Men and Championship Sabres sides. There are 3 newcomers joining us for the opening round of Timed Cricket action. USA Under-19 A wicket-keeper/batter Saharsh Shwethan is the sole Premier debutant. The 18-year-old from North Carolina already has some experience 'down under' as he spent a season in Adelaide 2 years ago.     The 2026/27 season begins with the return of a format trialled briefly 10 years ago: Timed (or "Declaration") Cricket. This Saturday the morning grades begin their 2-day competitions but the opening 2 rounds are single-day games with a twist. 105 overs are to be bowled in the day instead of the typical 100, with the team batting first able to declare at any point. A declaration is enforced at the maximum of 55 overs. The remaining overs in the day are available for the chasing side. 10 points are awarded to the winning side and if no definitive result is reached - the chasing side reaches the

    St Albans sent a team to the annual Mud Cup pre-season competition in Blenheim for a 3rd year in a row. The competition was extended from 4 to 5 teams this year, with the addition of Heathcote. We made it through 3 round robin games across the Friday and Saturday (including a bye) before Sunday morning's final round. A comfortable win against Sydenham promised much, but this was followed by defeats to Heathcote and the hosts.     Kia ora koutou, The 2025/26 season was another important chapter for St Albans Cricket Club. The club is in a stronger position both on and off the field, and whilst our progress is incremental, it is measured and positive. I believe we are moving in the right direction.
