After day 1 was washed out, the Sabres arrived at Hagley 5 on what was a gloomy (early) morning. After Southby lost the toss, the Sabres were put in to bat in what was believed to be the toughest period to bat throughout the day. Quick wickets left the side 38 for 3 in the 17th over. Gutsy innings from captain Southby (26) and batsman Hugh Symes (39) gave the Sabres some foundation to build. C Gibbons (39) again performed with the bat, and provided extra support before J Anderson (48) scored valuable runs at the death to get the Sabres up to a respectable score of 201/10. At the innings break, the Sabres knew they would have to do some hard work to get the 10 wickets needed to win, on what had become a good flat batting deck.
A solid opening stand from the Riccarton openers was only to be broken by some dicey running between the wickets, and the Sabres had their first breakthrough at 43/1. A wicket for T McClean just minutes later broke things open for Saints, and suddenly, Riccarton appeared exposed. 4 wickets apiece for Sam Kearns and Jack Anderson lay the game to rest. Kearns bowled 11 overs 4-22 and Anderson bowled 11.3 overs 4-19, with his last 5.3 Overs going for just 2 runs (1Lb) and taking his 4 wickets. Jack Anderson was player of the day.
The Sabres look forward to moving towards white ball cricket in the T20 competition
