Masters Men BBBBs
One-day v Lancaster Park at Garrick 1

by Mark Hampton

Initially scheduled for Barrington Park and then moved to Garrick 2, we arrived at the park to find a very underprepared pitch. The batsmen from both sides were quick to notice an empty Garrick 1, and with big smiles quickly moved their bags to that end of the park. Those smiles only lasted a few balls. At the end of the first over our captain, who had won the toss and confidently announced we would bat, made a small strategic change by dropping himself well down the order. With the ball doing all sorts we managed to accumulate 14 of the first 10 overs, and battled through to 47-3 at drinks. Some glorious shots by Gibby (23) and Rich (20) were restricted to singles by the long grass. The second half of the innings saw another 135 runs added, with Iggs (62), Flav (38) and Wellsy (23) taking the aerial route in between ducking the balls popping off a length. 182 seemed a defendable total in the conditions, and so it proved. Two early wickets to Eagle were followed up by four for Potty and three for Flav. Tim Corry, fresh off a hundred the week before, briefly threatened to take the game away with a hard hit 41, but the caught Smith bowled Flavell combination came through on the second attempt, and LPW were eventually bowled out for 95. Our player of the day was Iggs who not only enabled us to post a competitive total, but was superb behind the stumps on a day that was as tough for keepers as batsmen.
